History of Richmond House

Clive Victor Llewellyn Reynolds was the youngest son of John and Hannah Reynolds.  He was born on the 10th October 1898.  Clive’s father was the blacksmith of the village as was his brother William John.

Clive was a pupil at Dale school from 21 July 1902 to 11 October 1912 – ‘over age’ was noted in register.  He regularly attended Sunday School in the Congregational Chapel, Dale and played the organ there.  The last entry alongside his name in the Sunday School Register is dated 17 September 1916 when there were only 4 men on the roll, having dropped from 11 in January 1915, as the men went off to war/were engaged in the war effort.

Records show that c1916/1917, Clive enlisted at Haverfordwest as M/299802 Private Clive Victor Llewellyn Reynolds, Arm Service Corps (M.T.) and then as 78046 Private Reynolds joined the 15th Battalion, the Durham Light infantry.

On 16 September 1918 the Red Cross, Geneva, forward to Clive’s family ‘notification of death received in Germany’ which roughly translated states that:

The above born 10.10.98 Dale, fallen 24.03.18 Ham, died 30.07.18 in Reserve Hospital IV Trier a.d. Mosel from blood poisoning resulting from shot wound in right thigh.  Buries in Parish cemetery, the grave is marked.  He was admitted very ill, but bore his suffering with great patience and resignation, being grateful for the smallest service.  He passed away in the early morning of July 30th.

It was decided in 1922 that the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who had died all over Germany should be brought together into four permanent cemeteries.  Cologne Southern was one of those chosen and the following year, graves were brought in from 183 burial grounds.  Private Reynolds was one of the 48 burials of 1917-1918 brought from Trier Town Cemetery to Cologne Sourthern for reburial.
